Chemical Peel Treatment Candidates

A chemical peel might be the right choice for you if your skin imperfections are mild to moderate. It is an ideal option if you want to improve the appearance of your skin without going through a more invasive process that requires a longer recovery period.

Many patients with naturally dark skin tones and a history of extensive scarring may not benefit from a chemical peel treatment. You should not undergo this treatment if you have a history of skin diseases or if you take any medications that make your skin more sensitive.

Your Consultation

A consultation will be required to communicate your individual needs and desired outcome. Chemical peels can be specifically formulated to target hyperpigmentation, sunspots, freckles, acne scarring, fine lines, and wrinkles.

We will look over your medical records. You may be asked about medical issues, current medications, allergies, and past cosmetic treatments.

There will also be a physical examination. We will examine your skin to decide the best peel for you. Your unique characteristics, like skin tone and skin thickness, will be considered when choosing your chemical peel.

The Treatment Process

A conventional chemical peel takes 20 to 25 minutes. First, a trained staff member will cleanse the skin of the treatment region of any products or dirt.

During the procedure, a mixture of chemicals is applied to the skin, where it works to lift away dead and damaged skin cells on the skin surface. They then stimulate the existing cells to regenerate and produce more collagen. A brief stinging sensation may be felt, which is normal.

Chemical Peel Aftercare

The recovery time from a chemical peel procedure lasts from 3-5 days, during which you can expect minor redness and peeling. You may experience some temporary irritation and flaking as the peel exfoliates away dead skin.

Your skin may temporarily become rough, patchy, and discolored after a TCA chemical peel; this is normal and will pass. The nose and mouth will generally peel first, but peeling can start anywhere. Peeling begins 3 to 4 days after treatment.

A cold compress can be applied to the area being treated as needed to alleviate any discomfort. After treatment, you shouldn’t do anything too strenuous for the next two or three days to keep the inflammation and skin irritation from getting worse.

Your skin will undergo a period of new cell development and will be more susceptible to environmental damage during this time. Keep out of the sun for at least 3 to 6 months following treatment to protect your refreshed skin.

Depending on the depth of the initial peel, you may return for additional sessions. Superficial peels are more likely than deeper peels to require more than one session.

It is recommended that chemical peel treatments be spread out over a few months in order to give your skin enough time to heal and rejuvenate itself in between sessions. Although discoloration and scarring are extremely unlikely side effects of a chemical peel, choosing an experienced medical aesthetics expert will minimize these risks even further.
