If you’re like nearly half of Americans, you’ve tried to lose weight at some point over the last 12 months—and perhaps you’ve even set forth a weight loss resolution for the new year. Whether you’ve struggled with your weight your whole life, or recent changes have led to more pounds than you’d like to carry around (think: Pandemic stress and easy access to all-day snacking at home), you’re not alone. In fact, according to results of a study published on Harvard Health examining the impact of COVID and weight gain, 39% of patients studied gained weight during the course of a pandemic year.
But by no means is all recent weight gain attributed to the pandemic. Sadly, almost 40% of adults in America had obesity in 2015–2016. This trend is what originally led me to open Forward Medical Weight Loss, now a part of Forward Healthy Lifestyles. For years, I witnessed first-hand the rate of obesity in America, and the negative—sometimes even fatal—side effects obesity can have on one’s health and wellbeing.
Obese or just heavier than they’d like to be, many people have had weight loss aspirations for years. Many have also yo-yoed back and forth between their ideal weight and a number on the scale they’d prefer to ignore. These days, wanting to get healthy and lose weight is as common of a goal as it is admirable. “A new survey revealed that 60% of Americans want to feel healthier and 51% want to lose weight by exercising and changing their diets.”
But the most important thing to remember is that while weight loss isn’t always easy that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Even those with the best intentions can fall victim to common weight loss mistakes. From assuming exercise alone can transform your physique without committing to a healthier diet, to giving up when you don’t see dramatic results within your first few weeks, to going it alone without support from those around you, whether that be friends, family or a professional.
